Last week, while on Spring Break I found several locks like this one. It looks like part bunching (3 lock pattern) on the ends from my original locking session and R4 (reverse 4) at the front of the lock after changing my pattern as recommended by my Consultant. R4 is working out well do to the tighter pattern on my hair type.....however......
The middle of the locks are very weak and I just decided to ......whack them off! Five locks in all! They were very annoying and I could not stand the way they looked just hanging on for dear life.
Could it be something else?? Just curious to know if anyone else has expereinced this issue? If so, what did you do?
I also wondered if it could be from over manipulation of braiding, twisting and curling. Hummmmm....

YEP! I have several of those SAME locs, and went to my Consultant in an absolute panic and too my surprise, she had nothing to say about them, she didnt explain why they were like that, but at the same time, she had no concerns about it. I still cant help to think they are a defect of some kind. Mines, are all located in the back of my head, what about yours? I was thinking maybe it was due to my hair being more fine in the back and when the new hair comes in, it isnt as thick as the original hair back there that had a chance to thicken up. I dont know, but if you find out an explaination please share!
I had the same thing last year. Mine were located in the back of head. I went to consultant who was concern as well. Have you notice any changes to your scalp? I use to twist and Bantu knot my hair after washing but gave the knotting a rest to see if the section recovered. I also found out that the side effect for my allergy medicine caused possible hair loss.
Now six months later that section is back healthy and strong. I am still not knotting after wash, switch meds and add Carol’s daughter Hair Elixir.
I have had SL for nine years

Welcome back Creyole!
Thanks Mel!
Azzia,
Well, the few that I have are are from front to middle of my head. That's a good point because that section of my head has softer hair.
I'll also take the advice and stop manipulation after washing and see if that makes a difference.
Anon,
I agree I do believe it is some kind of defect
How often do you get groomed?
Well I guess I do kinda sorta have this same thing going on with several of my locks. But mine are mainly right at my front hairline. The first 70% of the lock is real skinny but the remaining end is fatty. I had several locks combined because I was worried the root was becoming too thin to survive on its own. One poor little lock was hanging so bad I nearly lost it. I don't know if my cause is the same as yours but the end result sure is so I can relate a little.
Oh my goodness! Just last week I was rolling my hands though my hair and guess what?? Yep, on my nap, there are several "Fat Head" locs. I started to freak out...I thought, at the rate I was going I would end up with one fat combined loc in the back.
All of the "Fat heads" are in the back of my head. The texture is a notably different curl pattern (it is almost straight) compared to rest of my head...most curious?
Ok, now I don't feel too bad, good knowing it must be part of process for some of us!
I dont know how my first comment was logged as anonymous, but I am getting groomed about every 4-6 weeks, I will say, I did have a timeframe when I went an embarrassing amount of time between retightenings, and that is when I first noticed them. But I dont know if that is related to the issue.
well, i realize I have bl's and it's a whole 'nother animal..but...my braided ends are poofy like yours and the tightly latched new growth is just that, tight. I agree with ops it is a defect of the sl technique. She changed your pattern because your hair was bunching and 2 loose for the pattern of choice. Now the pattern holds the lock in place, and you dont see it. Hope this makes sense.
I have quite a few like that, but I really don't worry about them anymore. I figure if they break, so be it, but they haven't. This is difficult to explain but, my best guess is that on several occasions I went for far too long between retightenings which allowed the short hairs of the new growth to go for too long before being incorporated into the pattern. When I became more diligent in doing retightening every month to 5 weeks, I noticed that they didn't thin out like that.
Add my name to the roll. I had one like that (in the back) and it broke off after I unbraided and unbanded. I'm watchin it to see what it's gonna do. So far the part that stayed is nice and strong with a long loose end. I also have some that don't feel like their goona break but they feel normal from scalp to midpoint and thinner from mid to end. Like Anon, I think this must be a defect in the SL techneek. The longest I've ever gone between retightnin is 7 weeks and I was pretty much a freestyler until I started usin the Soft Spikes a couple of weeks ago. Since you took the retightin class were you not informed/warned about this? Maybe this is what people mean when they say 'I heard Sisterlocks will break off.'
I have had locks that looked like this & the eventually broke off themselves. In my case I say they thinned out because of over manipulation. I know am more careful with how tight my ponytail is & if I get my hair braided I ask that it not be so tight.
Last year I freak out because an 8 inch lock just came out in the back as I was running my fingers trough.
Good news is that my hair grew back & I now have some baby locks.
Welcome back,

I am so glad I came across this post, because I have lost quite a few locks too. Let me rephrase, I was so disgusted by a couple of locks that were hanging on by a strand that I cut them off. Most of mine are in the back. I kept thinking it was hormonal, but heck, it's been 18 months since I had the baby so hormones should not be a factor. Anyway, I feel a little better about my loss now that I know a lot more folks are going thru the same thing
Hello everyone! I had to share my own experiences! I too had the same problem along the back edges. I believe my problem is that I use the Loc Soc and when I wrap my hair the tension from the wrap weakens my hair over time. There is nothing wrong with the Loc Soc itself, but it slips up in my sleep, making my back edges vunerable to my pillow as well as the wrap created extra tension. I am more careful when I wrap my hair at night. Hope this helps!

Hi I wanted to ask if you could explain to me how to do a reverse 4, that would be great because I just cant figure it out. I have decided that I would start to do my own hair and I currently have a reverse 4 pattern in it and I only know how to do a 2, and I am scared that if I change the pattern I will weaken my locks. .......Please Help if you can.
I am my been convinced pretty girl that 'HAIR' is you future - not to naked stage production though in perverted truth I would love to see you dance around on stage in that lack of costume, But puttin that aside, Hair is your life, our passion and with your braveness you would own a whole change or "Surge,s Scissors"
